Prompt 1. In the unit “Philosophy of Mind and Self,” we studied several theories about on identity, or self. Some claim that there is a lower self, and a higher self that is universal; some claim that there is no self at all; some equate self with the ability to think, or reason; others believe self is consciousness of the physical world that works with memory, or self is merely a fabrication of our imagination; and finally, there is the claim that a self is to be found in action, and not in mind.
Some of these theories of identity, and their possible implications, have found themselves in works that are not philosophical at all:, movies, comics, literature, TV shows, and the like. Although these works do not strictly follow a philosophical theory of identity, they may suggest, or echo, certain ideas we have studied.
Your assignment is to find works from non-philosophical works that touch on the problem of identity. Briefly summarize the work to present the viewpoint of identity, and then see if you can find a general connection with the philosophical works we have studied. You may use as many examples as you wish, but do not exceed four pages.
