2. Vera Schwarcz. “Introduction” from Chinese Enlightenment
3. Peter Duus. “Chapter 1: The Origins of Meiji Imperialism” from The Abacus and the Sword
4. Peter Duus. “Chapter 7: Defining the Koreans” from The Abacus and the Sword
Write a maximum 600 word response. In your response, please summarize the author’s main argument and address how the argument is built up (i.e. What evidence does the author use and how does it support their argument?). Your task is to provide a concise summary of the reading.
Please use proper Chicago Style citations.
Hpi Avoid using direct quotes to explain the author’s argument. Instead, try to paraphrase and explain the author’s argument in your own words to demonstrate your understanding of the text.
