In jobs you have had, what aspects of the workplace did you find particularly satisfying? What role did managers have in making the organization a satisfying place to work? How do your experiences, then, fit in with the ideas of Abraham Maslow and Douglas McGregor? In the jobs that I have had, the aspects of the workplace that I found particularly satisfying was having the freedom to be in a position where I could progress at a faster rate than others. Where managers trusted me to complete the job my way (within limitations of course) in order to be more efficient and productive to the workforce. Havin the freedom to take charge and be innovative was another satisfying aspect. Managers did not necessarily have a role in making the organization a satisfying place to work, it was more of the immediate supervisors that made choices that sometimes management were not too fond of. Many of you prior military members may concur with another example when an LPO lets the entire crew go home early once all work was completed, and management’ or the upper chain of command would be angry as a result when they found out. In my past work experiences, when it comes to the ideas of Abraham Maslow, the motivation was always different for me in each. My first job, I did not necessarily need’ management to help me fulfill my physiological needs as I was living with my parents still. My wages were not necessities for survival or gratification but for unnecessary wants. As I grew older my priority needs where not in the same order of Maslow’s pyramid step process. McGregor’s Theory X for me personally did not fit as I was the complete opposite of his Theory X postulates (. I had drive, ambition, intelligence in my job and I was willing to try innovative ideas. My managers were more driven toward the Theory Y perspective in their leadership. Where, ‘managers should conceptualize workers as motivated by the higher-order needs,’ (Miller, 43). While working in an office setting, I have found that structure has been the most satisfying. I prefer a supervisor who cares about their employees while also ensuring that everyone is staying on the right track. In my past position, I worked with a lady who was best friends with our supervisor, therefore, she was able to take off anytime that she wanted, take 30 minute smoke breaks multiple times a day and play on her cell phone at anytime. This was frustrating as I take pride in my work and would not feel right with myself if I took breaks several times a day. I switched to a different position and now have a new supervisor. My new supervisor keeps a close eye on everyone which limits the cell phone time that we have along with any extra breaks. This ensures that everyone is doing their job and those that want to do their job are not having to pick up the slack of someone who just wants the paycheck. I believe that the satisfaction of working in a structured environment relates most to Douglas McGregor’s theory X. Some are motivated by only the paycheck, while others are motivated to do well in hopes of a promotion within the workplace.
