I thought Sheryl maintained great eye contact with the audience. She ha a nice opener connecting with the 2016 Graduating class. She did a nice job telling us about the 3 P’s and then recapping them, I thought that strengthened her points. She had a ton of emotion in the speech, she spoke about the struggles she needed overcome following her husbands death. Although it was a long speech I think the time was appropriate for the occasion. a I don’t think some of her jokes landed. Her shots at men, distracted me from what was important in her speech.(Alumni women accomplishments) I thought she could’ve considered the audience and the mood of the occasion. While her perseverance was impressive, the speech was dark at times. She considered the audience and tried to connect, as she often referenced food and bars the students would be familiar with. She showed emotion but I don’t know that it was appropriate for a commencement. I like how she would tell you what she would talk about, break each point down and then summarize the points she mentioned. There were points that I didn’t care for like the shots at males, and I thought talking about death at a graduation speech was maybe not the best narrative. But then the speech made me feel compassion and empathy for her and I was happy she fought through the struggles and over came the tragedy. I think overall this was a very effective speech. 1. Sandberg gave a commencement speech at UC Berkley. She did some things well. She maintained eye contact throughout her speech. She also articulated her words and made sure everyone could hear her speech. She also kept her composure at all times, even when talking about her husband’s passing. She did a good job talking about how she faced adversity, just like the college students did. She did a good job telling her story and explaining why this school held a special place in her heart. She did a good job adding jokes in her speech to lighten the mood. 2. There are some things I would have Sandberg change. She did not appeal to the emotion of the audience. The audience members were happy. They were there to celebrate a special and happy occasion. Her speech evoked sadness when she talked about her husband’s passing. This may have been an appropriate story for a different event. She should have kept the speech lighthearted and happy to fit the mood of the occasion. I would also tell her to make the commencement speech shorter. Twenty-five minutes is a long time to keep the audience’s attention. Additionally, the audience is there to celebrate their family and friends, not listen to a speech. 3. I think she adheres to some of the tips and not others because she was not taught the elements of an effective special occasion speech. She may not have known about appealing to the audience’s emotions and making sure the speech suits the occasion. UC Berkley may have also not given her a time constraint, so she may have thought she could go for as long as she wanted. Sandberg may have thought that her approach to the speech was different and would be memorable to the graduating students.
