Introduction
You ever wonder how in crime show dramas and movies, the detective must successfully piece together the clues to solve the mystery? They must use the powers of observation and clues to establish a major premise to begin the investigation. In essence, this is the media literacy skill of deduction in action.
Deduction is the skill of using a few premises to reason logically toward a conclusion. The basic procedure of deduction follows a reasoning process where you examine the major and minor premises to draw on a conclusion.
The deduction algorithm follows three steps: begin with an observation, (2) identify a relevant general principle, and (3) use the two premises (observation and general principle) and reason a conclusion. The essence of deduction is to reduce things to a simple logical process where the conclusion seems so obvious that on one would dispute it. Let’s look at the algorithm that will help you do this.
For this assignment, you will choose which type of content to apply the deduction algorithm. You must choose between entertainment, advertisement, and news. Choose ONLY ONE concept to complete this assignment.
Your paper should focus on the following:
Present a real-world example of the deduction algorithm using relevant examples from your chosen content focus area (entertainment, advertising, or news). Connect your conclusion to a media effects theory.
How does the crafting of content of entertainment, advertising, and news effect the consumer and why is this important for media literacy?
Here’s an example of the deduction algorithm in action as applied to the content construct of advertising as it relates to animal abuse and pet
owners:
Observation: There are a lot of different types of advertising about owning a pet. Some of the ads focus on pet care (food, insurance, etc.), while others seem to focus on the emotional feeling and attachment (like ads showing sick or lamed animals).
General Principle: People care about their pets.
Conclusion: If people can care about their pets, then they may be able to care about the welfare of other animals that may be in crisis or threatening extinction. Therefore, pet owners may be more inclined to donate to causes surrounding saving animals.
Instructions
1.	Write a 500-word paper using the writing prompt provided above.
2.	Use and refer to the media literacy skill of deducing (defined above) in your work.
3.	Conduct auxiliary research and use/reference what you find in your work.
4.	You must show your comprehension and grasp of the subject matter. DO NOT simply summarize the information.
5.	Make sure you review the Writing Assignment Organizer to assist you in completing your work.
Resources
Remember to choose ONLY ONE from this list to complete your assignment.
(1) Entertainment and Story Formulas (Framing Theory) There are two ideas that can make the biggest difference in helping you increase your level of media literacy with entertainment messages. First, continually think about how producers are blending reality and fantasy together in their entertainment messages. Second, frequently analyze the entertainment messages you enjoy to see how producers used story formulas to attract your attention and hold it throughout their storytelling.

Overview
In both your textbook and supplemental materials you have learned about how cases make it to the Supreme Court. In this discussion you will have a chance to choose a recent (preferably within the past 15 years) Supreme Court case, summarize it, think more deeply about its possible impact on politics/your own life and discuss this impact with others. Not all of these cases have been decided yet, so you may also need to find out the status of the case.
Step 1: Choose Your Case
Choose a case (preferably within the last 15 years):
You can go to OYEZ.ORG for a list of all Supreme Court cases or OYEZ.org 2022 for a list of more current cases. If you decide to research some of the cases that have gotten a lot of press recently, you are welcome to choose one of these to research:
McDonald v. Chicago
•	Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission
•	Arizona v. United States
•	National Federation of Independent Businsess v. Sebelius
•	Shelby County v. Holder
•	U.S. v. Windsor
•	United States v. Tsarnaev
•	United States v. Zubaydah
•	United States v. Texas
•	Hemphill v. New York
•	Houston Community College System v. Wilson
•	Wooden v. United States
•	Ramirez v. Collier
•	Biden v. Missouri and Biden v. Texas
•	Brown v. Davenport
•	Carson v. Makin
•	303 Creative LLC v. Elenis
•	Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College
•	American Medical Association v. Cochran
•	Arizona v. City and County of San Francisco
•	Badgerow v. Walters
•	Berger v. North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP
•	Town of Greece v. Galloway
•	Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby
•	Fernandez v. California
•	Riley v. California
•	McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission
Step 2: Research Your Case
Find out the following information about your case:
•	Has a decision been made in your case? If yes, what was that decision? How many Justices voted for/against the decision? (The page for the case you are researching on OYEZ.ORG will have this information – at the bottom of the page you can also see who voted for/against this as well as sort by ideology).
•	What is the issue being discussed? Summarize the main points.
•	What are the two sides of argument? Summarize those.
•	Why do you think this issue this issue is important? What impact could this have?
•	Do you think ideology impacted this case? If so, how?
Some places to go to research more about your issue:
•	Ovez.org
•	SCOTUS Blog (the Supreme Court Blog – the search feature will pull up information about your case)
•	PCC Shatford Library Databases. Try Opposing Viewpoints in Context or National Newspapers Core. If accessing off campus, you will need to enter your LancerPoint ID and password.
•	PCC Shatford Library POLSC 1 LibGuide
•	National Review
•	The Hill.com (hover over News and you will be able to choose House or Senate)
•	The American Spectator G»
•	New York Times
•	The New American
•	Politico (check out the Congress tab)
•	The Cvbercast News Service E»
•	Roll Call
•	Human Events ?»
•	The LA Times (check out US tab and then Politics)
The Washington Times
Step: 3 Create Your Summary + Thought Questions
Combine the information you have found and create a 300-400 word summary and analysis of this issue for your initial post in your own words based on your research. If you are having difficulty with your writing, you can get help from PCC’s online tutoring service. Please do so before your initial post due date!
Directions
For your Initial Post due by Thursday 11:59 PM:
1.	Post your summary of your arricie and the websites you got your information from. Make certain to include a citation. For help with citations you can check out this PCC Citation page:Citations.
2.	Create 1 or 2 thought questions about the article. These should be questions that help your classmates’ think more deeply about the topic and their own perspective. Such as:
1.	If decision is made	what do you think would happen?
2.	How should the public respond to…?
3.	Why do you think…?
4.	How do you feel about…?

Week 9 Discussion and Attendance Question: Accessibility

and Disability Justice Needs to be 3 paragraphs of 5-7 sentences each Please consider and respond to the following questions for this week’s discussion:

? What would it look like to apply a disability justice framework to your (current or future) work with families and communities? Thinking with our materials this week and earlier content on equitable family support, what do you think are some differences between a disability justice approach to family support and traditional service delivery models?

? At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a wave of creativity, accessibility, and quick changes increased the level of access to services, community spaces, etc. that offered proof greater accessibility is possible in many of our social systems. Several years later, it can feel like we have lost the drive to continue to create accessible spaces. Drawing on the Teen Vogue article, reflect on how the pandemic has impacted your own ways of thinking about and practicing community and accessibility. Does any part of the article resonate with your own experience?

This draft known as the Fieldwork Essay – Draft Submission, must be submitted prior to your final essay. Submitting the draft will allow you to receive valuable feedback from your instructor, which can help improve your final submission. Please note that this draft submission will be included as part of your overall grade.
