· Bill Paper

Review the North Carolina Legislature site and select a Bill of interest and discuss it in the form of a 4-5 page paper or PowerPoint presentation using the Bill Paper Rubric. The PowerPoint must be around 10 slides and must have notes in the PowerPoint about what you would discuss in a lecture. Both the paper and presentation must have citations. Please make sure to follow the guidelines in selecting an issue, presenting multiple forms of arguments about the bill, and what you think may be missing. It is not enough to have an issue with no arguments (a bill that passed with no opposition): you must select an issue and make an argument in favor of a side. You must explain your argument and write while using evidence about what the opposition was to the bill.

Discuss the U.S. Middle East policy that involved Washington’s four-pronged policy and explain why the collapse of the four-pronged strategy occurred. Explain the Soviet Union and Middle East’s relationship during this period and its implications on U.S foreign policy and homeland security.

Reading preparation: Chapter 6 & 7 Lesch, D. W. & Haas, M. L. (2018). The Middle East and the United States, history, politics, and ideologies (6th ed.). Routledge.

HSE 302: 250 words minimum (APA)

For this week’s discussion, consider the following:

· What are some functions that are essential to an EOC in your area based on specific threats or challenges your community might face? For example, if you live in a coastal area, your EOC may need to be prepared for hurricanes and mandatory evacuations or if you live in areas prone to wildfires, you might have different essential functions.

Delegations of Authority Checklist

Orders of Succession Checklist

ENG 102: 150 words minimum (MLA)

After reading this week’s assigned literature as well as the online learning resource entitled “Style, Tone, and Mood,” respond to one of the following prompts:

1. Tone: What one-word adjectives would you pick to describe the tone in each of this week’s three assigned stories? List those three words in your main response (you can list more than three if you want). Then, defend your choices by discussing specific dialogue, word choice, or description in these stories that helps convey their respective tones.

2. Style: Provide a specific example of each week 4 author’s writing style by selecting a specific sentence (or, specific words/phrases) from each story that you think best illustrates each author’s distinct style. Then, discuss the following: how does each author’s style best suit the content of the specific story they’re telling? How do you think one of these stories might be different if told by one of the other week 4 authors? Explain.

3. Mood: Make a 3-song soundtrack playlist for any of the assigned stories we have read this week (it could be one song for each of the three stories, or three songs for one story). List the title of each song you’ve chosen, the name of the artist, and provide a brief description of why you chose the songs you did, meaningfully connecting each song’s lyrics or music to a relevant theme, event, or mood in the story.

Week 4 Response Paper

Choose one of the following prompts to complete for your response paper this week.

1. After reviewing this week’s resource on style and tone (under the Online Learning Resources heading), consider one text from either Week 3 or Week 4 to discuss. If you had to name the author’s style, what would you call it and why? Give examples from the text in your discussion. Show how the style and/or tone (as well as related terms like point-of-view or word choice) helps to inform the meaning of the story as a whole.

2. Pick one story from Week 3 or 4 and discuss its theme. How is that theme developed in the story? What tools does the author use to present the theme? Try to incorporate at least three literary terms (from the Week 1 Online Learning Resource) in your discussion and remember to use examples from the text in your argument.

Looking over all the stories we’ve read in weeks 1-4, choose one* to discuss through the “lens” of a single literary theory (refer to the “Literary Theories Defined” resource from Week 3 for a refresher). Why did you choose the theory you did? How does it illuminate the text in a new or different way? Once you respond to these questions, develop a new argument about the text (like the ones discussed in the and “Literary Theories Applied” resource in Week 3). Make sure to incorporate quotes from the text to support your argument. *** Note: make sure to choose a text that you did not already write about for your first response paper back in week 2.*** FEEL FREE TO USE ONE OF THE READING ATTACHED FOR THIS WEEK.

Requirements:

MLA Style and Word Count

· Your analysis should contain at least ONE direct quote and ONE paraphrase from the text (with MLA in-text citations as necessary), and your paper should include an MLA-formatted Works Cited page

· Remember to observe MLA formatting: double-space your paper, with headings and a centered title on page 1; use 12 Times New Roman font.

· Your finished response should be at least 800-1000 words.

Structure

· The introduction paragraph should include a clear thesis statement. It should also clearly identify the title of the literature you’ve chosen to write about, as well as the author’s name.

· Each body paragraph should have a clear topic sentence that relates back to the thesis. The information in each paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.

· The conclusion paragraph should restate the thesis, summarize the main points of your argument, and offer some closing context or insight regarding your topic.

Mechanics, Grammar, and Punctuation

· All written assignments should be mechanically and grammatically correct, with proper punctuation. 2. Response Paper Rubric

Review on forward and backward mapping. Considering the “Community-First Public Safety” case study, and the articles on different ways of approaching policy analysis, in a (longer) policy memo for the mayor, first discuss what problem the several programs/components (Reimagining Public Safety in Saint Paul) are addressing (be as specific as possible in defining the problem-and is it the same for the various stakeholders?). Provide a brief overview of each program components. For the three most important components in terms of the Mayor’s overall vision, forward map the policy components as best you can. Provide all this information in a detailed policy memo.

Week 3 Skill-Building Activity

Part of writing an effective analytical research paper (which you will begin working on a little later in the course) involves using evidence directly from your primary texts (the literature itself) as well as the works of other critics and scholars ( secondary texts). Therefore, you will need to get comfortable with finding these types of sources, analyzing them, and accurately quoting or paraphrasing from these outside sources in your own writing. This activity helps build these research skills by writing a brief article analysis.

For this activity, choose a critical article from one of the Library databases that makes a clear argument about any one of the stories you’ve read for the class so far. The databases that would work best are Bloom’s Literature, JSTOR, Literary Reference Center, Literature Resource Center, or ProQuest. The article you choose must provide more than basic biographical information and plot summary to make an opinionated argument about some aspect of the literary work you read in class. Your response should be at least 300-500 words in length and sufficiently address all stated content requirements.

Requirements:

Analysis

· In your analysis, you should clearly identify the article author’s thesis and main points by briefly SUMMARIZING the article’s main ideas.

· Next, ANALYZE the article author’s argument. What is he or she trying to say about the literary material? What textual evidence does the author provide? What new point or idea is the author trying to introduce about the literature? Also make sure to consider what literary theory the author is using. How can you tell?

· Finally, EVALUATE the article author’s argument. Is the article’s thesis relevant or convincing to you? Why or why not? What does the author do (or not do) that helps to convince readers of his or her viewpoints? Would you have used that literary theory in your own analysis of the text? Why or why not?

· At some point in your paper, you should include at least one QUOTE and/or one PARAPHRASE from the article, with appropriate in-text citations.

MLA Style

· Your paper must be formatted according to MLA format (this includes having a header, double spacing throughout the document, appropriate font, etc.)

· Use correct MLA in-text documentation as needed.

· You must include a Works Cited page at the end of your paper.

· For more information about MLA style, view the MLA Formatting and Citations page: https://gmc.mrooms3.net/course/view.php?id=53340 .

Mechanics, Grammar, and Punctuation

· All written assignments should be mechanically and grammatically correct, with proper punctuation. For more information on each of these, view Purdue OWL’s pages on the following:

· Grammar: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/grammar/index.html

· Mechanics: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/mechanics/index.html

· Punctuation: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/punctuation/punctuation/index.html

· Skill-Building Activity submissions will be graded using the following criteria:
