Wk 6 Assignment

Instructions

Select a scholarly article on intercultural communication using the course library. Please make sure you are choosing a peer-reviewed article from an academic journal. If you have questions on selecting an article, please message me or reach out to the librarians for help. Write a short paper, 500-750 words in length, in which you:

· Summarize the article BRIEFLY.

· Identify the research problem.

· Analyze the article, examining the strength of its thesis/hypothesis, method of investigation, analysis of data, and conclusions.

· How does this research fit into the big picture? Connect your article with the lessons from the week or the course as a whole.

· Discuss your educated opinion on the research. Can you apply this research to “real life?”

· Remember to include an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph.

Please consider the following:

· Please use APA format. Please see the APA resources in the Library.

· Important Tip: Choosing articles that you can potentially use as resources in future assignments would be helpful in getting “ahead”.

· Originality of attachments will be verified by Turn It In. Both you and your instructor will receive the results.

Due on Apr 14, 2024 11:55 PM

Week 8 Assignment

Instructions

Annotated Bibliography and Reflection

During the last seven weeks of class, you have been asked to read several journal articles. You have been asked to reflect on your cultural identity as you consider the many levels that constitute your identity. You also considered attribution, dialectics, and how all of this is applied to intercultural communication.

For our final assignment, you will choose four articles from the articles you have been asked to read in class and/or from the article list provided for the Week 6 assignment to create an Annotated Bibliography. You will complete three items for each of your four sources:

1. Reference: Complete an APA reference for each article

2. Annotation: Complete an annotation for each article.

· The annotation is not a summary or paraphrase. In this paragraph, you will interpret and evaluate the contents of the article itself. It is a narrative paragraph of about 100 words providing information and assessment about the article.

3. Reflection: Write a reflection for each article. The reflection should connect your intercultural communication experience(s) with information from the article as it applies to you personally (This section only can be written in first person).

· In this paragraph of about 100 words, relate the information that you have evaluated in the article to your own cultural identity and intercultural communication. This is a reflective piece where you are able to connect the information in theory to an understanding of your own identity.

Assignment:

The importance of research design can never be over-emphasized. It dictates the approach toward asking a research question, but it also is an indicator of the type of data required to answer the research question(s).

1. The assignment begins with selecting two dissertations or well-documented studies. Select one qualitative study and one quantitative research design. [Note: Be sure to choose at least one previously selected dissertation from the first few modules of this course, if possible.

2. Create a matrix shell that will allow you to carefully review the various data collection activities used for each of the selected research studies. This matrix will be a 2 X 8 table with the eight different parts of the data at the left vertically and the two labeled studies across the top (horizontally listed).

3. Insert the data from the two sources into the matrix shell. The completed matrix will facilitate a structured comparison of the instrumentation, the data organization, the data analysis plan, and the discussion findings. Summarize the two dissertations selected for this assignment. Explain how the findings may change depending on the research design chosen.

The vertical labels should be as follows:

1. Research Methodology- For a quantitative study, it could be quasi-experimental, descriptive, inferential, etc. For a qualitative study, it could be labeled narrative, phenomenological, Grounded Theory, ethnography, case study, etc.

2. Site and Population – What is the typical way that a site is located in order to do this type of study? Where would they be associated? Would it be as a group or individually discussed?

3. How to Access Population/Rapport – For example, contact the administration for permission? Look for people on the Internet who have had needed experiences? Contact a single person to collect archival data?

4. Sampling Selection Plan – How did the researcher select a site and then the individuals to complete the study? (e.g., purposeful sampling, stratified sample, random sample from a list).

5. Instrumentation – What was the form of the data collected? (i.e., interviews, focus groups, test results, observations, a survey given, special artifacts collected, etc.).

6. Ethics and Data Security Plan – Took notes, used an interview protocol, and transcribed it from recording, collected survey forms and aggregated into a spreadsheet, placed in file folders, computer password protected, etc.?

7. Validity and Reliability – Any problems accessing materials and proving the authenticity of the account? Any possible personal biases in the collection or analysis of data? What were the potential inconsistencies?

8. Data Analysis Plan – Once the data was collected, how was it analyzed to allow discussion of the findings? Was it placed in tables, analyzed with special statistical tests, used coding to find the “essence” of what was presented orally from the interviews, etc.?

The matrix will include data from the two l will be found by reading through each study. The 1250 – essay should describe each of the cells of the matrix in detail. That is, the assignment this week involves both a completed matrix and the supporting essay describing the information provided. The data contained in the matrix does not count towards the required word count for the assignment.

Focus the essay portion of your assignment on describing, evaluating, comparing, and contrasting how different types of research (one qualitative and one quantitative) affect how the results are explained and findings are described.

Follow APA writing style guidelines for this assignment. Clearly use headings to mark the specific sections in your paper. The title page and reference pages do not count towards the minimum word count. Include at least two (2) credible citations for your ideas and reflections.

Assignment Expectations

Length: 1250 – words; answers must thoroughly address the questions in a clear, concise manner.

Structure: Include a title page and reference page in APA style. These do not count towards the minimum word count for this assignment.

References: Use the appropriate APA style in-text citations and references for all resources utilized to answer the questions. Include at least two (2) scholarly sources to support your claims.

Format: Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx).

w2 Literary Analysis

CONFIDENCE

Complete the Week 2 Literary Analysis Tools Module before completing this assignment. Part of your grade is based on selection, integration, and citation of paraphrased quotations.

Read all of the information below before posting your response. This is a post-first forum, and you must post your response before gaining access to your classmates’ posts. Submitting a blank post may result in a reduction of your grade.

Post responses to both prompts. You must post on three different days to earn full credit for participation.

Post 1: You learned the definition of the American Dream in Week 1, and you also learned about the American identity. Traits often associated with the American identity include boldness, confidence, perseverance, and integrity. These traits are often demonstrated through a character’s words or actions. This week, we’ll focus on confidence and how it is reflected in two of the readings. Choose one character from a work of fiction (“Desiree’s Baby” or Trifles) and one person from a work of non-fiction (Torres, Kobabe, or Stanton). Describe how confidence is reflected in each.

Criteria:

· 300 words minimum (excluding quotations and citations)

· Include two properly integrated and cited paraphrased quotations (one related to each character) to support your claims. See the Literary Analysis Tools Module from this week’s activities for information about integrating and citing paraphrased quotations.

Posts 2 and 3: Respond to two different classmates. Do you agree with your classmate’s perspective? Why or why not? Be specific. What is the most convincing part of your classmate’s post? Why?

Criteria:

· 150 words minimum for each post (excluding quotations and citations)

· Include at least one paraphrased quote from in each response to a classmate to support your ideas. See the Literary Analysis Tools Module from this week’s activities for information about integrating and citing paraphrased quotations.

There is a no-research policy in place for this class. Using any material other than the assigned readings and lectures, even if it is correctly quoted and cited, will result in a failing grade for this assignment. Contact your instructor if you have questions about this policy.

First, you’ll need to choose a topic for your final essay, which will be at least 1,000 words in length. This is the topic you will use to create your outline in Week 2 and final essay in Week 3. Choose ONE of the topics below.

Option 1 – Watch either The Great Gatsby or The Color Purple and relate it to “The Way to Wealth”

The American Dream lecture in Week 1 points out that Poor Richard’s Almanac was an annual publication that included calendar lists, home recipes, weather forecasts, etc. What made Franklin’s almanac unlike other almanacs was the inclusion of Franklin’s witty parables and humorous writings. The maxims below relate to Franklin’s ideas of working hard, avoiding debt, and working toward attaining a virtuous character. Choose three maxims and align them with a character or characters in either The Color Purple or The Great Gatsby. For example, you might choose Celie from The Color Purple and discuss maxims 1, 4, and 6; or, you might choose The Great Gatsby and align Daisy with maxim 4, Tom with maxim 5, and Nick with maxim 6. You will be providing quotes from the film you select to support your observations about each character/maxim in your essay.

Choose Three of These Maxims from “The Way to Wealth”

1. “There are no gains without pains”

2. “Do not squander time, for that’s the stuff life made of”

3. “Fools make feasts, and wise men eat them”

4. “He that lives upon hope will die fasting”

5. “The second vice is lying, the first is running in debt”

6. “If you will not hear reason, she’ll surely rap your knuckles”

Your thesis statement should follow this template:

Three maxims from Franklin’s “The Way to Wealth” that the characters embody in The Color Purple (or The Great Gatsby) are _____, _____, and _____.

Option 2 – Compare or Contrast Using the Assigned Readings:

Write a comparison or contrast essay about two of the corresponding characters in the table below. You will choose three of the points of comparison from the pool below as your points of comparison or contrast. Keep in mind that the purpose of a comparison or contrast essay is to reveal something meaningful about the characters and their relationships to the text.

You will be using a point-by-point style of comparison, and you will have two choices for your thesis statement:

While some differences between __________ and __________ (names of characters in the pairing you chose) are evident, they are similar in the aspects of __________, __________, and __________ (you will determine three points of comparison from the pool, and those will become the topics of your three body paragraphs).

While some similarities between __________ and __________ (names of characters in the pairing you chose) are evident, they are different in the aspects of __________, __________, and __________ (you will determine three points of comparison from the pool, and those will become the topics of your three body paragraphs).

Choose one of these pairings:

Choose three of these traits:

1. Rip Van Winkle and Hugh Wolfe

A. Confidence

2. Deborah and Desiree Aubigny

B. Boldness

3. Dame Van Winkle and Mrs. Hale

C. Empathy toward others

4. Faith Brown and Minnie Wright

D. Perseverance

5. Maia Kobabe and Justin Torres

E. Integrity

F. Honor

Now that you have selected a topic and thought about your thesis statement, the next step is writing an outline to help you plan the final essay. Download and complete the appropriate outline for the topic you have selected.

When you are finished with your outline, submit it by clicking on the title of this page and submitting a Microsoft Word document. Do not type your outline into Blackboard using the “Text Submission” button; you must submit a file. Outlines not submitted as Microsoft Word documents may be returned to you ungraded.

There is a no-research policy in place for this class. Using any material other than the assigned readings and lectures, even if it is correctly quoted and cited, will result in a failing grade for this assignment. Contact your instructor if you have questions about this policy.

· Roberts, C. M., & Hyatt, L. (2019). The dissertation journey: A practical guide to planning, writing, and defending your dissertation (3rded.). Corwin Publishing Co. ISBN- 9781506373331. Read Chapters 6 & 9.

To complete the discussion, you must have access to the textbook above to provide a valid accurate response to the posting.

1. Discussion Question: Post must be at least 300 words. Since a critical step in preparing to complete a dissertation topic for research begins by having a good understanding of the most current, supportive literature, the literature review is usually found at the beginning of a dissertation and then is referred to throughout the rest of the writings.

There are many steps in accurately preparing and writing a literature review. The eight steps listed by the required reading reflect upon the two steps you feel are the most important in such review’s success.

The 8 steps from the textbook:

· Identify keywords or descriptors.

· Create a search query.

· Identify relevant literature sources.

· Search the literature and collect relevant materials.

· Critically read and analyze the literature.

· Synthesize the literature.

· Organize the literature.

· Write the literature review.

2. Discussion Question: Post must be at least 300 words. Select two additional steps and explain why these are also key parts of the literature review process . Use information from your readings to support your selection, along with providing some examples of how this would be seen by both the researcher and the reader.

Assignment 1 – PERSEVERANCE

Traits often associated with the American identity include boldness, confidence, perseverance, and integrity. These traits are often demonstrated through a character’s words or actions. This week, we’ll focus on perseverance and how it is reflected in two of the readings. Choose one character from a work of fiction (“The Soft-Hearted Sioux,” “Pawn Shop,” or The Invisible Man) and one person from a work of non-fiction (“Speech to the Osages,” Incidents in the Live of a Slave Girl, or “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”). Describe how perseverance is reflected in each.

· Criteria: 300 words minimum (excluding quotations and citations)

Assignment 2 – Outline Correction

Assignment Requirements

Using your outline as a reference, write (and revise) your essay. Your essay must be at least 1,000 words in length (do not count the title page or references page in your word count).

Teacher Remark!! “I would definitely change the “similarities” to “differences”–I believe you would find much more evidence to support this assumption. Hugh Wolfe takes his own life, knowing that he has an incurable disease, and is kind and well meaning towards his family. Rip Van Winkle lies in a drunken slumber for twenty years, is taken in by his family, and resumes his lazy life thanks to his daughter!”

Assignment 3 – Integrity

You learned the definition of the American Dream in Week 1. You also learned about the American identity. Traits often associated with the American identity include boldness, confidence, perseverance, and integrity. These traits are often demonstrated through a character’s words or actions. This week, we’ll focus on integrity. For this discussion, use any of the Week 4 readings except for “Woman Hollering Creek” and describe how two of the characters display strong moral principles.

Criteria:

300 words minimum (excluding quotations and citation)

Assignment 4 – Creative Assignment

“Woman Hollering Creek” is told as a third-person narrative, not as a first-person narrative. The difference is that a third-person narrative presents the characters to us in the words of a narrator rather than from the words of the characters themselves. The story contains descriptions such as “Cleofilas did this” or “Cleofilas said that,” but it’s not as if Cleofilas herself is telling everything from their perspective. Of course, sometimes she speaks in the story, but she does not get to tell the story or what she thinking or feeling. It is up to the reader to determine what she might be thinking or feeling.

For this assignment, imagine you are Cleofilas writing a journal entry the events described in the story. Try to get into the mind of Cleofilas. Be imaginative and creative. Pretend you are Cleofilas and have successfully left your marriage with Felice’s help. You will not be retelling the plot of the story; you will be Cleofilas reflecting on what has happened. In this journal entry you can put down whatever thoughts she might have using absolute frankness and honesty.?

Criteria:

Write a minimum 400 words in paragraph

Assignment #1
You learned the definition of the American Dream in this week’s lecture. You also learned about the American identity. Traits often associated with the American identity include boldness, confidence, perseverance, and integrity. These traits are often demonstrated through a character’s words or actions. This week, we’ll focus on boldness. How is boldness reflected in the characters of Rebecca Harding Davis’s story? Choose two characters from “Life in the Iron Mills” and explain how boldness applies to them in the story.

300 words minimum (excluding quotations and citations)
Include two properly integrated and cited direct quotations (one related to each character) to support your claims. See the Literary Analysis Tools Module from this week’s activities for information about integrating and citing direct quotations.

https://www.gutenberg.org/files/876/876-h/876-h.htm – this is the article it is in reference to

There is a no-research policy in place for this class. Using any material other than the assigned readings and lectures, even if it is correctly quoted and cited, will result in a failing grade for this assignment. Contact your instructor if you have questions about this policy.

————————————————————————————————————————————–
Assignment #2
Creative writing in response to literature is a way for students to respond to literature in a personal way. Creative writing provides a way for students to practice critical thinking and develop a stronger understanding of literary criticism while showing creativity and a bit of their own personalities. For this creative writing assignment, you will do a character analysis to allow you to get inside the mind of one of the characters. “Rip Van Winkle” and “Young Goodman Brown” are told as third-person narratives, not as first-person narratives. The difference is that a third-person narrative presents the characters to us in the words of a narrator rather than from the words of the characters themselves. The story contains descriptions such as “Rip Van Winkle did this” or “Young Goodman Brown said that,” but it’s not as if the characters themselves are telling everything from their perspective. Of course, sometimes they speak in the story, but they do not get to tell the story or what they thinking or feeling. It is up to the reader to determine what the characters might be thinking or feeling. For this assignment, choose one of the following options: (A) Imagine you are Rip Van Winkle’s daughter, Judith, writing a journal entry after her father reappears after 20 years. Try to get into the mind of Judith. Be imaginative and creative. Pretend you are Judith and have just seen your father after he has been missing for 20 years. You will not be retelling the plot of the story; you will be Judith reflecting on the events of the day. In this journal entry you can put down whatever thoughts she might have using absolute frankness and honesty.” OR(B) Imagine you are Young Goodman Brown writing a journal entry the day after the events described in the story. Try to get into the mind of Goodman Brown. Be imaginative and creative. Pretend you are Goodman Brown and have just experienced the events described in the story. You will not be retelling the plot of the story; you will be Goodman Brown interpreting and reflecting on the events of the day. In this journal entry you can put down whatever thoughts Goodman Brown might have using absolute frankness and honesty.” Criteria:

Write a minimum 400 words in paragraph form, using Times New Roman 12-point font (or similar) with double spacing. A title page is not required.
Submit as a Microsoft Word attachment on the submission page (click title above). Assignments not submitted in this way may be returned to you ungraded
