COMM 2312 PMU Complaint Letter and A Positive Adjustment Letter Project

4004 AlMorikbat Street Dammam 32271, Saudi Arabia October 17, 2021 Samsung Galaxy P.O. Box 78439 Khobar 32341 Attention: Customer Services Department Subject: Faulty Cable This last week, I bought a Samsung TV from your store in Khobar and unfortunately, after two days of usage, the TV stopped working. I would like to use the 5-year warranty to get a replacement TV. I purchased the 65in smart TV from your store in Khobar on October 15 th, 2021. The invoice number is ASX9837420111, and the TV Model number is UN46B600VFXZA. The Saudi Ministry of Commerce states that a customer is allowed to return any product in the following 7 days of the purchase. The warranty given with the TV also states that any manufacturing error that causes the TV to stop working gives me the right to return it and get a brand-new one. I would like to get a brand-new TV and not the same one I return with just that error fixed. I believe that you are the right person to reach out to in order to get this problem resolved. Please let me know when I can get the replacement TV. Yours truly, Saed Alahmari Saed Alahmari Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University College of Sciences and Humanity Studies Technical and Professional Communication: COMM 2312 Fall 2021/2022 Lennon, Chapter 15 Assignments 2: A Complaint Letter and a Positive Adjustment Letter (10%) Assignment Due Date: Thursday, October 21, before midnight Writing a Routine Claim Letter and a Positive Letter Adjustment This assignment is to be answered by two students. One should write the complaint letter; the other should write the positive letter of adjustment. Because each couple of students will receive the same score, each student in each group is expected to verify that the letter written by his partner is correct is formatted according to the instructions. The assignment requires writing the following business letters: I. A Complaint Letter In writing the complaint letter, you ask the business representative for a replacement of a dysfunctional device or machine or whatever product you purchased a week ago. Your request is guaranteed because of a warranty you have received with the purchase. Each group should make only one submission that includes a file carrying both letters. II. Positive Letter of Adjustment In writing the positive letter of adjustment, you apologize to your unhappy customer and grant him the request he has made in his complaint letter. Letter Format and Rules 1. Provide 1.00? for the top and bottom margins and 1.3? for the left and right margins. 2. Don’t use borders. 3. Provide all main parts of a business letter. 4. Use the Routine Claim Letter, on page 385 as a model for your complaint letter; use the Positive Adjustment Letter, on page 390 as a model for your adjustment letter. 5. Your positive adjustment letter must have (A) a letterhead and (B) a logo (Here you may either use the actual company’s logo or create one for a company that does not have a logo.) 6. Each letter should have only three paragraphs. Each of these paragraphs should exactly contain 3–6 lines of text, where the body paragraph is the longest. 7. Use Times New Romans, size 12. 8. Provide a single space within each paragraph and double spaces between paragraphs— that is, one single white space. 9. Justify all each letter’s lines for an esthetic purpose. 10. Submit the two letters together in one file. However, each one should be on a separate page. Submitting each letter as a separate file, will cost me a lot of time; therefore, I will grade each one of 3.0, instead of out of 5.0, 11. No late or emailed work will be accepted. 12. Violating any of the above rule will result in losing half a point. MLA In-Text Citations: The Basics

Guidelines for referring to the works of others in your text using MLA style are covered throughout the MLA Handbook and in chapter 7 of the MLA Style Manual. Both books provide extensive examples, so it’s a good idea to consult them if you want to become even more familiar with MLA guidelines or if you have a particular reference question.

BASIC IN-TEXT CITATION RULES

In MLA Style, referring to the works of others in your text is done using parenthetical citations. This method involves providing relevant source information in parentheses whenever a sentence uses a quotation or paraphrase. Usually, the simplest way to do this is to put all of the source information in parentheses at the end of the sentence (i.e., just before the period). However, as the examples below will illustrate, there are situations where it makes sense to put the parenthetical elsewhere in the sentence, or even to leave information out.

General Guidelines

  • The source information required in a parenthetical citation depends (1) upon the source medium (e.g. print, web, DVD) and (2) upon the source’s entry on the Works Cited page.
  • Any source information that you provide in-text must correspond to the source information on the Works Cited page. More specifically, whatever signal word or phrase you provide to your readers in the text must be the first thing that appears on the left-hand margin of the corresponding entry on the Works Cited page.

IN-TEXT CITATIONS: AUTHOR-PAGE STYLE

MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the author’s last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text, and a complete reference should appear on your Works Cited page. The author’s name may appear either in the sentence itself or in parentheses following the quotation or paraphrase, but the page number(s) should always appear in the parentheses, not in the text of your sentence. For example:

Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263).

Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263).

Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263).

Both citations in the examples above, (263) and (Wordsworth 263), tell readers that the information in the sentence can be located on page 263 of a work by an author named Wordsworth. If readers want more information about this source, they can turn to the Works Cited page, where, under the name of Wordsworth, they would find the following information:

Wordsworth, William. Lyrical Ballads. Oxford UP, 1967.

IN-TEXT CITATIONS FOR PRINT SOURCES WITH KNOWN AUTHOR

For print sources like books, magazines, scholarly journal articles, and newspapers, provide a signal word or phrase (usually the author’s last name) and a page number. If you provide the signal word/phrase in the sentence, you do not need to include it in the parenthetical citation.

Human beings have been described by Kenneth Burke as “symbol-using animals” (3).

Human beings have been described as “symbol-using animals” (Burke 3).

These examples must correspond to an entry that begins with Burke, which will be the first thing that appears on the left-hand margin of an entry on the Works Cited page:

Burke, Kenneth. Language as Symbolic Action: Essays on Life, Literature, and Method. University of California Press, 1966.
