Communications Question

Communications Question

For part 1 you will be reading a letter and responding to that. Here are the things to include in your response letter. In your introduction, list at least 5 points to be discussed in the response letter. (10 points) Describe the main interpersonal communication problem in detail. (10 points) Summarize two other specific interpersonal problems from that letter.  Relate the interpersonal communication problem to at least two of the interpersonal communication principles explored in Week 5-7 of the course content. (10 points) Dear Shannon I am currently in a pickle. I cannot seem to hold my tongue. To give you a little background I am the kind of person to always speak my mind. I always have and I always will! It is who I am, and who would I be if not myself? Anyways, I always find myself in situations where this seems to be a problem. Can you believe that?! For instance, there was this one particular time where I was taking the bus to go downtown. You know, the real big grey buses you see all over. I find myself a seat and mind my business when all of a sudden a stranger sits next to me. Now I usually don’t mind having folks sit next to me on public transportation, but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was he started singing his poor ugly heart out! To some wretched song he had going on through his headphones. Now me being me, I tell him his singing is lousy and he needs to stop. Of course, he doesn’t take too kindly to this and begins to tell me he can do whatever he likes. Again, me being me I had to tell him he’s wrong and that when it comes to his singing how could he like it because it’s honestly just horrendous. Then suddenly I am the bad guy and everybody on the bus tells me to leave him alone. I just don’t understand, my opinion definitely matters and it needs to be heard. That’s exactly why I always speak my mind! I know communication is irreversible, so that’s exactly why I have been having a hard time recently. There was another instance. I remember this fairly vividly, it just happened the other day. I was with some ‘friends’. Let’s call them Smiles Too Much and What’s Deo. Smiles Too much I just met recently, I thought he was a decent human being but that all changed rather quickly. Yesterday was the second time we hung out and I don’t know how I didn’t notice this before but this guy just smiles all the time! It doesn’t matter what I am talking about, it could be something grim or happy he would just keep smiling. I brought this up to What’s Deo but he just brushed it off as ‘he’s just a really positive person’. Obviously, I couldn’t take it anymore and I had to say something. I told him something along the lines of his smile is creepy and I don’t care how positive you are. You can go be positive in a padded room because that’s where you belong! So you see, I just can’t help myself. I suppose communication is inherently relational. Maybe that’s why I can always speak my mind. I am typically better than most people so why wouldn’t they want to hear my opinion. If anything I’m doing them a favor. Let’s get started on What’s Deo. Honestly the problem is in the name. The guy just always smells. Forget about deodorant, he outta bathe himself in boiling soap water! I don’t mean to ramble but I really need help. MLA In-Text Citations: The Basics

Guidelines for referring to the works of others in your text using MLA style are covered throughout the MLA Handbook and in chapter 7 of the MLA Style Manual. Both books provide extensive examples, so it’s a good idea to consult them if you want to become even more familiar with MLA guidelines or if you have a particular reference question.

BASIC IN-TEXT CITATION RULES

In MLA Style, referring to the works of others in your text is done using parenthetical citations. This method involves providing relevant source information in parentheses whenever a sentence uses a quotation or paraphrase. Usually, the simplest way to do this is to put all of the source information in parentheses at the end of the sentence (i.e., just before the period). However, as the examples below will illustrate, there are situations where it makes sense to put the parenthetical elsewhere in the sentence, or even to leave information out.

General Guidelines

  • The source information required in a parenthetical citation depends (1) upon the source medium (e.g. print, web, DVD) and (2) upon the source’s entry on the Works Cited page.
  • Any source information that you provide in-text must correspond to the source information on the Works Cited page. More specifically, whatever signal word or phrase you provide to your readers in the text must be the first thing that appears on the left-hand margin of the corresponding entry on the Works Cited page.

IN-TEXT CITATIONS: AUTHOR-PAGE STYLE

MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the author’s last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text, and a complete reference should appear on your Works Cited page. The author’s name may appear either in the sentence itself or in parentheses following the quotation or paraphrase, but the page number(s) should always appear in the parentheses, not in the text of your sentence. For example:

Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263).

Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263).

Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263).

Both citations in the examples above, (263) and (Wordsworth 263), tell readers that the information in the sentence can be located on page 263 of a work by an author named Wordsworth. If readers want more information about this source, they can turn to the Works Cited page, where, under the name of Wordsworth, they would find the following information:

Wordsworth, William. Lyrical Ballads. Oxford UP, 1967.

IN-TEXT CITATIONS FOR PRINT SOURCES WITH KNOWN AUTHOR

For print sources like books, magazines, scholarly journal articles, and newspapers, provide a signal word or phrase (usually the author’s last name) and a page number. If you provide the signal word/phrase in the sentence, you do not need to include it in the parenthetical citation.

Human beings have been described by Kenneth Burke as “symbol-using animals” (3).

Human beings have been described as “symbol-using animals” (Burke 3).

These examples must correspond to an entry that begins with Burke, which will be the first thing that appears on the left-hand margin of an entry on the Works Cited page:

Burke, Kenneth. Language as Symbolic Action: Essays on Life, Literature, and Method. University of California Press, 1966.
