Instructions This exercise asks you to write a single, brief paragraph. It should not take the form of a larger document, such as a letter, an email, a report, or a plan. Submit 1 paragraph with no more than 250 words. In order to write your paragraph, complete the following steps: 1. Read the article. Although it is written for public and media relations professionals, it also is useful to digital, corporate, non-profit, health, and political communicators. 2. Consider the following crisis. It is April 20, 2010. You are the Communication Director for the company BP. You have just learned that an explosion occurred on an oil rig called the Deepwater Horizon, killing an unspecified number of people and causing crude oil to start spilling into the Gulf of Mexico. 3. Assume you are writing to the Chief Executive Officer for the company BP. 4. Present one specific recommendation for how your company should communicate about the event to a stakeholder, ensuring your recommendation incorporates the advice in the article. (You do not have to conduct research to complete this assignment.) In addition, describe the specific arguments that you would use to convince the Chief Executive Officer that your recommendation would be effective in reaching the stakeholder. Note that your paragraph will represent one idea that could be part of a larger document with additional ideas. This exercise is not asking you to write the entire document; instead, it is looking for a sample of what could be part of the larger document. 5. Limit your writing to 1 paragraph that is double-spaced and contains no more than 250 words. Start the paragraph by presenting your recommendation. Then use the rest of your paragraph to describe your arguments that justify your recommendation. vD9:@Fv9L9Q8w EGCCM9L9UAB8EB9xCDz9A9y>GM9L9aD>V8GE>B|9Q>G8?BCG|9L9JCDBA?B 9 9 _[ I`]j 9 YZ[]^[_`ab]cd`efaZgh]egi]j Zkk[gabefaZgh]j Zkk[gafl slBCDE9L9F[m`]9L9ZheW9 oVig[VG Teh`]`]mYoVd`]he^YH]gicjVj o`WbYBCDEYsVdVe^b`pG 6789:;?9@8=AB>CDE9FBGAB8H>EB 9I9J;GG8DB9KEE;89L96789:;?9@8=AB>CDE9FBGAB8H>EB 9I9F;MM8G9NOPN9KEE;8 JG;?>A=9JCMM;D>?AB>CDE9Q;G>DH9A9JG>E>ER9Suv9w>B79x8=>C9yG8z wAG?>A Ie[hjV]Yl[ceY^J`iiY^VWYU`WbYhggV^^YW[ [eVYWbh]YKXYi`aVYh]jY[]LjVh]j UVd`]he^Y`]YMXNFG H[ `]YT[jhlG XYZ[\V]W^ 234566378 8 TUVVW 5 11 x;D89Nyz9NOPN yCG9MCG89B7AD9{O9|8AGEz9x8=>C9yG8z9wAG?>A97AE978=y8z9?C;DE8= JzNE9ADz9=AGH89?CGyCGAB>CDE9B7GC;H79?G>E>E9E>B;AB>CDEO9x89>E ?;GG8DB=|9B789yG8E>z8DB9CP9B789Q8w9RCGSTE>E MADAH8M8DB9P>GM9UCHCE9JCDE;=B>DH9wGC;yO9wAG?>A9A=EC9E8GV8E9AE B7898W8?;B>V89z>G8?BCG9PCG9B789UCHCE9KDEB>B;B89PCG9JG>E>E XADAH8M8DB9u9zW8?;B>V89U8Az8GE7>yO YKP9|C;9?ADZB9?CMM;D>?AB898PP8?B>V8=|z9|C;9w>==9DCB9=8Azz[9wAG?>A EA|E9>D97>E9=AB8EB9?AB>CDO[9x8G8978 BA=SE9w>B796789FBGAB8H>EB9ADH9A ?G>E>E9E>B;AB>CD9>E9?CDB>DH8DB9CD97>E9CG978G9A=>B|9BC9?CMM;D>?AB8O _`aV]YWbVY]cdVeY[fY^[g`hiYj`^WehgW`[]^kYb[UYgh]YiVhjVe^ [^WYVffVgW`aVilYV]mhmVYh]Yhcj`V]gVYW[jhln FC?>A=9M8z>A97AE9CB8GAB8z9B789z>EB>D?B>CD9DE>z89ADz9C;BE>z8z9>DB8GDA=9?CMM;D>?AB>CD9ADz98WB8GDA= ?CMM;D>?AB>CDz9y;?9ADz9yG>VAB8O9QCw z9MCG89B7AD98V8Gz9=8Az8GE9D88z9BC9?9>D97Cw 9B78|9AyyGCA?79B78>G S8|9A;z>8D?8EO9zPP8?B>V8=|98DHAH>DH9w >B79S8|9A;z>8D?8E9>E9DC9=CDH8G9A9D>?8TBCT7AV89;A=>B|]9>BZE9A9M;EBT7AV8O ^ 78B78G9>B9w AE9?CDP8G8D?89?A==E9N59|8AGE9AHCz9CG9V>z8C?CDP8G8D?>DH9P59|8AGE9AHCz9CG9W9|8AGE9AHCz9CG96w >BB8G B7G889|8AGE9AHC9I9DH9z>EBGA?B8z9;Mz9D88zE9BC9G8?B8z9AB9B789?7ADH89B789=8Az8G9w ADBE9BC98PP8?B9>D9B789A;z>8D?8O oblY`^Yih]mchmVY^cgbYhYp[UVefciYiVhjVe^b`pYj`^g`pi`]Vn JCMM;D>?AB>CD97AE9yCw 8Gz9S89AD|9yCw 8GP;=9BCC=z9>B9D88zE9BC9V8=|9CG9>B9?AD9?A;E89E8=PT>DP=>?B8z 7AGMO9xAGD8EE>DH9B789yCw 8G9CP9?CMM;D>?AB>CD9>E9A9P;DzAM8DBA=9=8Az8GE7>y9z>E?>y=>D8O JCMM;D>?AB>CD9>E9B789?CDB>D;AB>CD9CP9D8EE9DV8EB9AE9M;?79B>M89AB9H8BB>DH9HCCz AB9?CMM;D>?AB>CD9AE9B78|9zC9AB9B789MCG89;ADB>BAB>V89CG9B8?7D>?A=98=8M8DBE9CP9B78>G9_CM8z9P;DzAM8DBA==|9M>E;Dz8GEBADz9?CMM;D>?AB>CDO9ND89G8AECD ECM89=8Az8GE9M>E;Dz8GEBADz9?CMM;D>?AB>CD9>E9B7AB9B78|9B7>DS9B78|ZG89A=G8Az|9HCCz9AB9>BO9678|ZV89DH9E>D?8 DH9E>D?89AH89`9CG95z9w G>B>DH9E>D?89ECCD9APB8G9B7ABO9aD=>S89_;EB9AE?>y=>D89=8Az8GE97AV897Az9BC9MAEB8Gz9B78|ZV89?AB>DH9B78>G9w 7C=89=>V8EO K97AV89PC;Dz9B7AB9MAD|9=8Az8GE9E;PP8G9?AG88GTz8P>D>DH9CD9D8AG=|9AE E8G>C;E=|9AE9B78|9BAS89MCEB9CB78G98=8M8DBE9CP9B78>G9_CDS9CP9b:ZE9cDCw 9PCGM8G9JzNd96CD|9xA|w AGz9ADz9YKZz9=>S8 M|9=>P89V89=8Az8GE9E889?CMM;D>?AB>CD9AE9A9?G>B>?A=9yGCP8EE>CDA=9AyB>B;z89ADz9w CGS97AGz9AB9H8BB>DH9>B9G>H7BO obhWYheVY^[VYUhl^YWbhWYiVhjVe^Ygh]YVqph]jYWbV`eYU[eija`VUYh]jY^VVYWbV`eYdc^`]V^^Yfe[Y^[V[]VYVi^Vr^ pVe^pVgW`aVn aDz8GEBADz>DH9AD9A;z>8D?89>E9?G>B>?A=9>D9CGz8G9PCG9=8Az8GE9BC9>DEy>G89BG;EB9ADz9?CDP>z8D?8O Kz8A==|9=8Az8GE97AV89z>G8?B98Wy8G>8D?89w >B79B789EBAS87C=z8GE9B78|9D88z9BC9?CDD8?B9w >B79I9B78|9V>E>B9w >B798My=C|88Ez w >B79>DV8EBCGEz9w >B79D8EE9yAGBD8GEz9w >B79?;EBCM8GEO9K97AV89CD89?=>8DBz9B789JzN9CP9A9H=C?A= ?CMyAD|z9w 7C9G8=C?AB8z97>E98DB>G89?CGyCGAB8978Az;AGB8GE9BC9F7ADH7A>9PCG9A9MCDB7O9x897Az9A==97>E9z>G8?B9G8yCGBE M88B9w >B797>M9B78G8O967>E98Wy8G>8D?8978=y8z97>E9?CMyAD|9B79B789?;=B;G8z9?;EBCM8G MAB89ADz98My=C|889yCy;=AB>CD9>D9B7>E9?CMyAD|ZE9S8|9HGCw B79MAGS8BO U8Az8GE9A=EC9D88z9BC9E88S9B789?C;DE8=9CP9B7CE89w 7C9>DB8GA?B9w >B79?CMyAD|9EBAS87C=z8GE9A==9CP9B789B>M8O967>E9>E9A9?CG8 yAGB9CP9B789y;?9G8=AB>CDE9yGA?B>B>CD8GZE9G8EyCDE>=>B|R9BC9D9B789w A|9EBAS87C=z8GE9B7>DSz9w 7AB9B78|9P88=z 7Cw 9B78|9MAS89z8?>E>CDE9ADz9w 7AB9MABB8GE9BC9B78MO 6AS>DH9EBAS87C=z8GE9E8G>C;E=|9G8;>G8E9A9?8GBA>D9G8Ey8?B9PCG9B78>G9yC>DB9CP9V>8w O9KB9G8;>G8E9?;G>CE>B|9ADH9w 7AB9>B9BAS8E9BC9w >D9B78M9CV8G9ADz9BC9S88y9B78>G9BG;EB9ADz9?CDP>z8D?8O zPP8?B>V89=8Az8GE9ADz9B78>G9y;?9G8=AB>CDE9?C;DE8=CGE9?CDD8?B9w >B79A;z>8D?8E9DH9w 7AB9MABB8GE9BC bZgmdfdi]_l]nd_o^pqjZgmdfrbZk zPP8?B>V89=8Az8GE9ADz9B78>G9y; MLA In-Text Citations: The Basics
Guidelines for referring to the works of others in your text using MLA style are covered throughout the MLA Handbook and in chapter 7 of the MLA Style Manual. Both books provide extensive examples, so it’s a good idea to consult them if you want to become even more familiar with MLA guidelines or if you have a particular reference question.
BASIC IN-TEXT CITATION RULES
In MLA Style, referring to the works of others in your text is done using parenthetical citations. This method involves providing relevant source information in parentheses whenever a sentence uses a quotation or paraphrase. Usually, the simplest way to do this is to put all of the source information in parentheses at the end of the sentence (i.e., just before the period). However, as the examples below will illustrate, there are situations where it makes sense to put the parenthetical elsewhere in the sentence, or even to leave information out.
General Guidelines
- The source information required in a parenthetical citation depends (1) upon the source medium (e.g. print, web, DVD) and (2) upon the source’s entry on the Works Cited page.
- Any source information that you provide in-text must correspond to the source information on the Works Cited page. More specifically, whatever signal word or phrase you provide to your readers in the text must be the first thing that appears on the left-hand margin of the corresponding entry on the Works Cited page.
IN-TEXT CITATIONS: AUTHOR-PAGE STYLE
MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. This means that the author’s last name and the page number(s) from which the quotation or paraphrase is taken must appear in the text, and a complete reference should appear on your Works Cited page. The author’s name may appear either in the sentence itself or in parentheses following the quotation or paraphrase, but the page number(s) should always appear in the parentheses, not in the text of your sentence. For example:
Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263).
Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263).
Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263).
Both citations in the examples above, (263) and (Wordsworth 263), tell readers that the information in the sentence can be located on page 263 of a work by an author named Wordsworth. If readers want more information about this source, they can turn to the Works Cited page, where, under the name of Wordsworth, they would find the following information:
Wordsworth, William. Lyrical Ballads. Oxford UP, 1967.
IN-TEXT CITATIONS FOR PRINT SOURCES WITH KNOWN AUTHOR
For print sources like books, magazines, scholarly journal articles, and newspapers, provide a signal word or phrase (usually the author’s last name) and a page number. If you provide the signal word/phrase in the sentence, you do not need to include it in the parenthetical citation.
Human beings have been described by Kenneth Burke as “symbol-using animals” (3).
Human beings have been described as “symbol-using animals” (Burke 3).
These examples must correspond to an entry that begins with Burke, which will be the first thing that appears on the left-hand margin of an entry on the Works Cited page:
Burke, Kenneth. Language as Symbolic Action: Essays on Life, Literature, and Method. University of California Press, 1966.
