And, we remained in slavery from 1519 until 1862. Even so, we gained the political clout to name ourselves and we have produced many prominent Americans. A little known fact about African American family names or last names is very interesting. The names have nothing to do with where they came from. My last name is Byrd, a European name, but I did not come from Europe. Most African Americans carry the last name of the people who held them in bondage. My family was held in bondage by the family of Senator Robert Byrd from West Virginia. His family held my family in slavery. My father’s name was Robert Byrd and our family DNA originates from West Africa to West Virginia. Though it has only been 150 years since Blacks have been freed, this course is taught by a descendant of slaves, President Obama’s father is Nigerian, and the first woman of colour to fly in outer space was a Black woman, Dr. Mae Jamieson.
