First student : Flores Unit 5 – Discussion Board I believe the most compelling topics for myself would be truly understanding primary and secondary resources. Knowing when to use primary or secondary research is vital to a marketing research plan. When looking “primary research is carried out to address certain problems that require deep analysis. It is “defined as a methodology used by researchers to collect data directly, rather than depending on data collected from previously done research.” (QuestionPro, n.d.) With secondary research you are relying on data that has been already gathered through other means. Being able to understand which method to use is also very important for many different reasons and after reading about primary and secondary research has truly opened my eyes on when the proper time to use it. The discussion boards are a great way to communicate with your peers and professors on the different topics that are being discussed for that week. This method of learning helps provide a larger understanding of the topic that is being presented because you are able to read your classmates responses. When reading their responses, they may have a different point of view that you have not though of yet. This also gives you the opportunity to debate your point of view with your fellow classmates. After reflecting on the past four weeks, I would have to say that I have improved on asking the right questions when regards to surveys. When developing an effective questionnaire, you really have to choose your words wisely to be able to get the answers that you are seeking for your Marketing plan. With the wrong wording can really jeopardize the data you are seeking. Also understanding how to set up open ended questions versus closed ended questions. Knowing which type to use is very crucial. I really liked learning about the primary and secondary research methods. Before this class if you had asked me what marketing research was, I might not have been able to tell you. I thought I had some knowledge about marketing research, but I hadn’t taken into account methods such as focus groups or observatory research. That really made me curious to know how many times someone in a Walmart for example, might have been observing my shopping behavior. I liked the breakdown of the different forms of the research as well: Basic versus applied research. I also like how we had to wrap it all up in the end for Acme through what we had learned. How did participating in discussions help your understanding of the subject matter? Is anything still unclear that could be clarified? Reading what others had stated in ways that I did not, gave me a chance to learn from other’s perspectives. I think it also helps when people point out different ways of thinking. I liked reading other people’s interpretations and understanding of the lessons and appreciated having people comment on posts that I had wrote. I think having positive reinforcement is great, and if I didn’t quite get something, having the professor add in or respond in positive teaching makes it extremely helpful. What approaches could have yielded additional valuable information? I think the course was structured well. There were times I sought out additional information in the live chats. I think the only thing that could have yielded more information would be to have an example outline for the key assignment. I didn’t really know where to start, except for reading through the books and going step by step (which was still helpful). I appreciate Professor Olufeso’s engagement with the class and help with any issues that arose.
