Using your choice of one of the films listed below you are asked to state a thesis and develop and defend that thesis by using critical materials available in film literature, the textbook, or other sources. Your paper will be a work of film criticism. It may be a discussion of a philosophical concept embodied by the film, a discussion of how the film has become historically important (either in terms of film technique and concept), or some other idea of your choice that you want to discuss. The four films are: • Run Lola Run directed by Tom Tykwer • Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder • The Usual Suspects, directed by Bryan Singer • Fargo, directed by Joel Coen The four films are available on request. Follow the conventions of MLA style in documentation and format when you write this paper. You do not have to have a cover page. Texts found via Google may be used but will not count as works of film scholarship unless they were from monographs or academic works published in print or electronic journals. All sources will be listed on the Works Cited page. • Have a clearly defined thesis. • The paper must be at least four pages of text, and your final page will be your Works Cited page. • Follow the rules of MLA style when documenting this paper. • The paper will be objective, so please write in the third person. • Your paper may be submitted in paper to Dr. Petrick at the Hinkle Library, or via email to [email protected] by December 10, 2019. • Use a traditional font, and the font size should be 12. • You should double-space the paper, and you should provideappropriate margins. • Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. • When you summarize, paraphrase, or directly quote material, then you must document it.
