This assignment has three parts, which will be submitted in one document.
Part 1: To learn more about the abilities and characteristics associated with intellectual disabilities, explore the various individuals portrayed in the video “Just Like You- Down Syndrome;” located under your weekly resources. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the individuals portrayed in the video with and without an intellectual disability.
Part 2: Brainstorm a list of what you believe are the abilities and characteristics of students with an intellectual disability as well as what you believe these students can and cannot do. Next, view the documentary “Monica and David” (located under your weekly resources) exploring the marriage of a young couple with Down syndrome, and the family who strives to support their needs. Revisit the brainstormed list and discuss how your perspectives may have changed and why.
Part 3: Discuss why “labeling” and “self-fulfilling prophecy” are particularly important concepts involving individuals with intellectual disabilities.
