Royal Estates Vineyards
Its a tale of two wineries in two
beautiful Canadian regions: Niagara and Okanagan Valleys.Vastly
different as winemaking regions but united by a singular commitment to quality
and innovation. Royal Estates Vineyards offers a full collection of fine VQA
wines made by dedicated winemakers and viticulturists committed to their craft.
Building on that tradition, the adventure continues as their organization
continues to play a vital role in exploring new frontiers in winemaking and
appreciation while maintaining strategic partnerships and forging new
initiatives in research, education and environmental responsibility. Both
locations offer four Seasons Wine. Not long ago, Royal acquired a new Winery in
South America, Chile, in the famous Colchagua Valley. Royals annual revenue is
$20,500,400 and employs approximately 60 people (Canada) and 30 people in their
new winery in Chile.
When co-founders
Javier Rivaldo and Karl Becker entered the Canadian Wine Industry in 1975
neither imagined that decades later they would have moved into the next century
as Canadas most prominent and internationally recognized winery. These
milestones show how Royal has continued to make its mark in Canadian wine
history and in the international world of winemaking. Royal received the most
prestigious award in the wine world at Vin Expo, France- the Grand Prix
d’Honneur for the 2013 Icewine. This pivotal turning point thrust Royal into
the international limelight, establishing major credibility as a serious wine
producer.
For the next four months at both
Canadian locations, they will be doing tremendous renovations and
expansion to enlarge their tasting rooms, Wine Boutiques and open a new
restaurant. Furthermore, the restaurants and the tasting rooms will be
available for hosting public and private events and include a state of the art
demonstration kitchen. Everything must be ready for the next tourist season
in May 2012 meaning they will also need to fill many positions relating to the
Canadian expansions plus the acquisition in Chile (Managers,Salespeople, Wine
tasting staff, Chefs, Sous Chefs-kitchen Managers, etc.).
Both co-founders treat their
employees like family and they believe in good, fair treatment
and effective employee relations. Lately,
they have noticed that a small number of employees in each department are
complaining about their working conditions. Most complaints are related to the
lack of benefits, Employee Services and to their current pay and incentive plans.
Furthermore, they have noticed that the storage/warehouse supervisors
are too demanding and rough with their employees and its affecting their
performance. They wonder if they can find some strategies on how to create a safer
environment and alsoavoid wrongful dismissal suits.Additionally,
the storage/warehouse manager is wondering if he can find a formal appraisal
method to keep a record of uncommonly good or undesirable examples of an
employees work-related behaviour. The last thing the two co-owners want is to have
to deal with a Union organization!
The global
expansion in Chile will involve the current Senior Winemaker from the Niagara
Peninsula who will have to relocate there in three months with three other Royal
managers: Tasting room Manager, Marketing Manager and Storage/Warehouse
Manager). These employees will be
trusted with operating the new acquisition.
The Human Resource
department and the co-founders have a lot to think about. First, they are trying desperately to replace
the senior employees who are relocating with the best talent available to
continue the great work in the Niagara Peninsula and secondly, they must hire
competent people related to the Canadian winery expansions. Today, their
challenge is to find accurate responses to their questions so that they can
understand how to start planning for all these changes. They have a number of
important decisions to make and they are not sure how to approach the situation
in order to find the ideal solutions. They would really appreciate if you could
take the time to answer all of their questions by giving them all the
appropriate information they need and ensuring they understand each of your
responses. Your mandate is to answer nine questions related to chapters 8-17.
Remember, this
process needs to be informative and done with a consultative approach.Be sure to tie your responses to the concepts,
notions and theories discussed in the course when responding
under each question.
